I went to curriculum night for Patrick's class and the gifted class tonight.  Both teachers are new to our school, and I think they're going to be wonderful.  The kids are so sad that the old gifted teacher is gone, because he was about as goofy and fun as they come - and of course, he had a roomful of reptiles.  I don't think it'll be long before she wins them over, though.  Patch loves his teacher, as do I.  I think we're going to have a great year!

I'm so excited.  Patch has made a friend in his class who actually lives in our neighborhood!  He spent the afternoon there yesterday and his friend came over here today.  He's been frustrated lately because he's realized that he is always the tag-along with Alex and his friends, and has really never had any friends his age and that weren't friends with Alex first.  He has become fast friends with a boy from his class last year, and now he's met this one who lives so close.  Woohoo!

Patch was "playing" with Grendel - I don't think she thought being a footstool was much fun!

Mom came over this afternoon to celebrate her birthday (a day early).  She and Alex went to Target (yes, he has her wrapped very tightly around his little finger) while Patch and I decorated her cake.  We had a special dinner and ate tons of cake and ice cream.  :-)  And Mom doesn't look a day over 30!  ;-)

Happy Birthday, Mom!

I'm very much enjoying the kids being back in school.  I scheduled something different every day last week, starting with a massage on Monday and a haircut on Tuesday.  And it only took a week, but my house is CLEAN!  I even cleaned the office and my desk!  I know, it's hard to believe.  I figured I'd better get as much done as I can before the volunteer schedule kicks in.

The boys were at the table doing their homework this afternoon, when they started in on the age-old argument about why they have to do homework.  They were ganging up on me, so I said, "Stop it.  You're just fueling each others' fires."  Patrick's response:  "At least we're getting along!"

Tomorrow is our anniversary (18 years!), so Mark and I went out on the town!  We went to a fantastic steak house and to a comedy club afterwards.  We had an absolute blast and realized we need to do this more often.

While we were out, Mom had the boys over to her house and put them to work.  She's been redoing Dad's old office, and discovered that his desk won't fit through the door (go figure).  She gave the boys a crow bar and a hammer (!) and let 'em loose.  They took out the drawers and destroyed them, and took out the screws to remove the top of the desk.  It looks like they've inherited Mark's knack for destroying things!

It's Our Anniversary!

Eighteen years ago today it all began.  On our wedding day, while we had such hope and vision, I never imagined that our lives would be this wonderful and full of happiness.  We have been so blessed, and continue to be every day.

Mark had the kids' computer on the living room floor while he worked on it, and got involved in a website with Alex.

I hope he always lets us look over his shoulder

Mom came over this afternoon, and Patrick interviewed her for one of his homework assignments.  He's so cute trying to get all of the spellings right.

The neighbor kids were all over playing on their Game Boys.  Somehow they ended up lined up in front of the door like they're in a dorm.

Mark's been waiting nine years for this.  He taught Alex how to mow the lawn!  He made it through half of the front yard before he gave it up, soaked in sweat and exhausted, but he was proud of himself.  I asked if it was hard to push the lawnmower.  He said the lawnmower was basically pulling him, but the turns were the tough part.

We watched the movie Home Alone with the kids.  The story is about an 8-year-old boy who is accidentally left behind when his family goes on vacation, and thwarts the attempts of some bad guys trying to rob his house while he's there alone.  At the end, there's a touching reunion between the boy and his mom as his family hurries home for him.  After the movie, Patrick came up to me and said, "I'm not sure why I'm doing this, but . . ." and gave me a huge hug.  I guess the movie made him appreciate me a little more!

Mom had the boys over today to finish off that desk they had taken apart earlier.  She let them loose - again (doesn't she learn?) - with a hammer and crow bar and they reduced that old desk to a few sticks!

That's quite a weapon for a wild child! They were enjoying this a bit too much!

After a rainout last weekend, Alex finally got to play in the first football game of the season.  He made a fabulous catch and pulled flags for SIX sacks!

We finally got a new computer for the kids, since the last one was a hand-me-down and never would play their games right.  They've been playing all of their old games as if they've never seen them before.

'Tis the season - hurricane season, that is.  It looks like Ernesto is heading our way, and we just got word that schools are closed tomorrow.  At least Ernesto doesn't look like it's going to pack much of a punch, but I suppose we still have to be ready.  Ugh.

August 30, 2006

Well, as you all know, Tropical Storm Ernesto turned out to be a real dud.  The kids got an extra day off of school, and that was about the biggest deal Ernesto could bring.  Alex was supposed to have a make-up football game tonight, and despite the fact that it was raining all day and night, he still thought we should go to the field just in case.  That should tell you how mild the "storm" was!
